buy a spade bit the correct size, cut it so the TANG is long enough to cut
through the metal and edge it several times during the drilling to keep it
sharp.

I have a drawer of one-time-use items that occasionally come back out for a
second turn.
i.e. a half inch open end wrench with the "thumb" cut off and the edge
ground for a wood lathe tool...
