day), and its for sale for $1100 if anyone wants to buy it. Its new
price is $2000 in home depot. This one runs very smoothly, and has been
rented 54 times and is around 18 months old. It sounded much smoother
than another one that had only been rented 48 times. Its a honda GX240
/ 8hp with a full I-beam and 24 ton rating, highway towable.

Sounds like a decent deal. The hydraulics on them are pretty reliable and
54 times would not be all that much wear.

Just curious Bob, how much wood do you split every year? What size logs
are you splitting?

But you asked why didn't you? If you split firewood by hand 25 years ago,
you'd know why he'd want a splitter. If I use wood for most of my heat, I
can burn 4 to 5 cords. Damned if I want to split that much by hand.

common use of the term around here) wouldn't be much wood. Try 25-30 around
these parts. That would be 8-10 full cords at 16". When I was burning
wood exclusively I split most of it by hand. The splitter I had was a bit
on the small side, required too much bending over and was generally too slow
and more work than just swinging a mall. Unless you got into one of those
really ugly pieces...

That's real cords. Face cords is what the yuppies buy in the cities.
Except they pay twice for a face cord what I pay for a full cord.

Never liked using a wedge. I use a maul and sit he wood atop a large piece
of wood. That way the point of the maul is hitting the log at about 90
degrees. A 12" oak log will split in one hit. A knarly hunk of hickory can
take half the summer. With a splitter, two guys can do a cord in minutes.

IIRC 8HP and 24 ton could mean a slow cycle time, or be optimistic.
Check that, unless you have already used it and are happy. What sized
ram does it have?

I am also not sure if it's that much of a bargain,

According to me, a 4" ram should only be able to do at best 16-17 ton.

4 / 2 = 2 * 2 = 4 * 3.14 = 12.56 in^2 * 3000 PSI = 38000 lb force /
2240 lb / ton = 17 ton

Are we getting into multiplying the ram force by the wedge action? Or

I don't know about this year, but last year HD was offering a similar
model for about $1,000, new. A friend of mine got one when they
were having a 10% off all power tools sale, so got it for $900.

He and his brother used to try to find the knottiest piece of wood they
could, and then put it in so that the knot was close to the ram, just to
try to get it to stall out. They couldn't even get it to slow down,
much less stall out.

(Been lurking here since 'bout 1995 or there-abouts. Not many posts in
the last 5-6 years, though grin).
