Clamp the support and the top together and drill the holes for the dowels at the same time. That would eliminate alignment problems. |

That's where "dowel centers" can come in handy and make it easy to align the dowel holes in both parts: http://www.rockler.com/dowel-centers Locate and drill all the dowel holes in part 1 only; Insert dowel centers into holes in part 1; Precisely align part 2 where you want it, on top of the part 1 (with the dowel centers inserted) ... much easier than it sounds, simply use some flat scraps as guides to align the planes of the two pieces appropriately. Apply just enough pressure to the aligned parts 1 & 2 to mark the holes in part 2. Drill the dowel holes in part 3. Just a couple of examples: the dovetailed casework is attached the base assembly on this Hope Chest with dowels, as above: https://goo.gl/photos/6gXoFXatY6wAQFsD9 And the bottom door assembly that replaced the rotten part is attached thusly, he https://goo.gl/photos/DfQjKbDQBpAsmxRo9 Dowel centers were used to precisely align the holes in both pieces. Takes longer to describe than to do. -- eWoodShop: www.eWoodShop.com Wood Shop: www.e-WoodShop.net https://www.google.com/+eWoodShop https://plus.google.com/+KarlCaillouet/posts http://www.custommade.com/by/ewoodshop/ https://www.facebook.com/eWoodShop-206166666122228 KarlCaillouet@ (the obvious) |
