A cushion would probably add another couple of hundred.

looking at this a little more i will not make eight holes

four would be enough and might just put two close to the center and
then two at the outside

Looks like you'd have to be pretty precise about the dowel placement.

Clamp the support and the top together and drill the holes for the
dowels at the same time. That would eliminate alignment problems.

That's where "dowel centers" can come in handy and make it easy to align
the dowel holes in both parts:

http://www.rockler.com/dowel-centers

Locate and drill all the dowel holes in part 1 only;

Insert dowel centers into holes in part 1;

Precisely align part 2 where you want it, on top of the part 1 (with the
dowel centers inserted) ... much easier than it sounds, simply use some
flat scraps as guides to align the planes of the two pieces appropriately.

Apply just enough pressure to the aligned parts 1 & 2 to mark the holes
in part 2.

Drill the dowel holes in part 3.

Just a couple of examples: the dovetailed casework is attached the base
assembly on this Hope Chest with dowels, as above:

And the bottom door assembly that replaced the rotten part is attached
thusly, he

Dowel centers were used to precisely align the holes in both pieces.
Takes longer to describe than to do.

drill the holes at the same time and then fit the dowels

i might setup the wingnut first for the extra clamping power and for
alignment
