I disagree to the point that math is needed, but to such a basic level
that any functioning adult in our North American educated society
should be able to solve the problem.

Since there was no mention of the person in question having any type
of learning disability, we have to assume a given level of
intelligence and comprehension. If that person has a given
understanding of English, then to converse with them on an acceptable
level, one has to also believe they are capable of at least a basic
mathematical understanding. Otherwise, we'd all be talking to people
as if they were functional morons.

to paint such a room together.

In 2 hours both could do 3 rooms, thus 2/3 of an hour for one room *if*
they don't argue about the color choice and get into a paint fight :)

I don't think you are unique in that regard. There are 2 parts to the
problem: Model and solve. Much more variety is encountered in the first
part so it probably takes longer to build up confidence--at least that's
the way it was for me.

Yep. It's all in how you frame the problem. In school, we were all
taught stupid formulas like 1/(1/t1 + 1/t2) or whatever, and when we were
taught that stuff, we all asked ourselves "howinthehell am I supposed
to memorize *that*?"

You're not supposed to memorize that. There's a lot that can be learned
from the problem if you give it a chance. Revisit it concentrated on
the units and rates being used. The consequence could have immeasurable
value--in fact, it's sure to.

If you finished that one, calculate the measure of the miter you need on
each piece to make an n-sided rectangular frame. Fun problem. If you
get someone to help you, and you calculate out how long it takes each of
you to paint one piece, you could calculate how long it would take you
to paint them all, working together! ; )
