Default req. Cub Scout Mother's day project

Hi,
Am planning on having cub scout den make a napkin holder for a Mother's day
gift. This would be a simple square piece of wood, with two dowels mounted
vertically, with a small rectangular piece of wood with the dowels sliding
through it, resting upon the napkins.
Just wondering if anyone had any other easy suggestions.
thanks

What age cubbies? What's your budget? The younger ones (Tigers) do well
with popsicle stick picture frames or boxes. Older boys can use a coping
saw and simple patterns to do cutouts, then glue the cutout (Mom's
favorite cuddly critter) to a slat box.

Then there's desk topers- pen/pencil or business card holders: simple
boxes sized accordingly.

Non-wood projects can be made of tin cans cleaned and decorated,
everything from the pencil cups to plunger holders (2# coffee can).

Go for wood/metal: Tuna tin, clean, decorate, remove sharp edges. Mount
to a sanded board, add a candle. The small tuna tins fit a votive candle
just right, standard size fits the 3" tower candles.

Older guys can do a make your own: cut lots of corragated cardboard into
long strips, roll tightly to fit into the tuna tin. Pack it tight, but
add a bit of string as a wick- at center, then 2 more about 1/2 way
between center and edges. The boys can do all this part. Have an adult
melt recycled candle wax and fill each filled tuna tin.

IME, the candle thingies went over better than the napkin holders.

Good luck, have fun and remember it's not what the boy does to the wood
that matters, it's what the wood does FOR the boy.
