Our great room faced the deck, but the opposite wall faced a loft,
and included two openings to the front hallway. With a cathedral ceiling, that meant the sides of the wall were triangular. I wanted a custom cabinet that filled the entire wall, so I just built it myself. The boxes were made in several parts in my shop, and included a base cabinet opening for a TV that could be closed off with doors, drawer and door units, door closure to hide stereo components and a kneehole area for the wife's computer. The face frame was installed in place, using solid red oak for its pronounced grain pattern and the raised panel drawers and doors were also of red oak for the same purpose. To blend everything in, I stained the red oak white, followed by several coats of clear coat, letting the grain pattern show through. Shelves were backed with painted hardboard to match the opposing wall flanking the FP and were just rotary oak plywood faced with solids. The triangular upper corners were a bear to make, since they involved trips up 22 steps from the basement, then another 14 to the loft. I lost weight on that.
