I will soon have access to 50 or more knots in black cherry trees. What is
the best way to harvest and treat this wood for turning into bowls?
The knots are from six to fourteen inches in diameter and most go all the
way around the trunks and branches that themselves range from three to eight
inches. How far above and below should I cut the knots? How do I split the
knots for turning, across or lengthwise?
I am also going to try to save as much of the twelve to fourteen inch black
cherry trees as I can before they get sent to the chipper. Is there a way to
keep these logs from splitting as they dry? Or isn't that going to be a
problem?
