Coring Systems
I was trying to decide which coring system to get. Being that I have a Jet
JWL-1236 and am fairly new to it, I was having some trouble deciding. I'm looking at the McNaughton System, and the Woodcut Bowl Saver. After reading some of this group's archives, I've found that perhaps my lathe is a bit underpowered for the McNaughton System. So, leaning toward the Woodcut Bowl Saver, I have a few questions for those who have one, and hopefully, those who also own the same lathe as I. I'd like to hear some comments about the Bowlsaver's use on underpowered lathes. Can I expect it to work well with my Jet, or is this a pipe dream that I would be able to use ANY of this type tool on my lathe? Also, I'm a bit confused from the Bowlsaver's website, I can't decide what comes in the kit. Is it just one size tool (for a single size core), or is it a complete set like the McNaughton System? If you some day upgrade to a larger lathe, you can take the McNaughton system with you. It will work on most size lathes. I got burned by buying a Oneway system for my Nova, then I up-graded to a larger lathe and I was stuck buying a new Oneway base unit to fit the new lathe, costing $187.00 It took a long time to find someone that was intrested in purchasing the old base unit. McNaughton system (med. size) is more versatile, but there are a couple of

That chap would be me... :-) Several years ago I published an article on using the Kelton Centre Saver and then later published my technique for using the Kelton on low power lathes. I refer to the technique as "Fluid Pulsed" to indicate the smooth, fluid pulses of the blade to accommodate for low power motors. I developed the technique because I was frequently asked to demonstrate use of the Kelton Centre Saver, on small 1HP lathes (My studio lathe features a 3HP motor). Woodcut bowlsaver: In reply to he recent post.
Our bowlsaver will work extreemly well on lathes from 1/2 hp upwards. The two main benifits are 1) The bowlsaver attaches to the tailstock as well as the tool post, thus dividing the force between the two. 2) The Bowlsaver works from a pivot point (as does the Oneway) which enables the user to accurately determine the point of entry and depth the cutter enters the wood. This is essential for maximum use of the wood. We use only two blades which remove bowls 3"- 12" from a 16" blank, simply by moving the point of entry anywhere accross the bowl face. Depth of cut is achieved simply by moving the unit closer to or away from the bowl blank. Our Woodcut bowlsaver is the most efficient unit for coring from a bowl blank and two Kiwi professionals have cored more then 1000 bowls in the last 18 months using the one set of blades. If you dont believe me I have some photos Our system comes with an instructional video and is idealy suited to the Jet or any lathe. The tool post is threaded in and you simply upgrade the post when changing lathes.
