Roy Underhill is turning up against unsupported grain on his spring-pole
lathe as I watch. Wonder where that came from? Everybody I've seen cuts same as we do now, toward the headstock, down hill to rough out the back. He's normally a pretty good scholar, so it's strange to see things like that. Other than that, nice spring-pole lathe. The treadle lathe he normally uses has an endgrain oak toolrest, but he put metal to ride on with the spring-pole. Face grain SYP doesn't have the solidity, I guess. Now demonstrating a version of the Bodger's steady. Good episode! |
