finish for white oak?
Ok, I'm working on a segmented bowl, mostly white oak with mahogany trim. I'd like the finish to be durable, maybe washable, so I'm thinking oil then poly, or some combination thereof. Anyone finished white oak before and/or have any suggestions? |

Yes, watch out when you're sanding. You've set yourself up for some red fill in the porous white oak. Sanding sealer _before_ you begin sanding, periodically thereafter, and brush/vacuum. |

The trim is only around the bowl edge, and I was careful to sand towards the rim and blow the dust off often. Would the sealer interfere with an oil finish? Anyway, I don't see any red fill, and I'm *not* planning on using the red buffing compound either. Nor the white, which makes the mahogany pasty. I guess I'm not buffing ;-) |

Sounds like painstaking sanding and cleaning is your answer if you're going to use a "penetrating" finish versus a surface. |
