Soak them in tomato sauce, seriously
It's very effective, but don't leave them too long though, or the acid
might start to pit the surface.

Can anyone suggest a way to remove verdigris from brass WC seat hinges?

I tend to replace with chrome. Unchromed brass hinges are just more trouble
than they're worth.
