There seemed to be an odd omission in last night's programme.
Originally, the stairs came up in the middle of the room, and
they spoke of a platform bed over the stairwell.

At the end they mentioned something about arranging alternative
access, but I can't remember seeing any work on the stairs, which
must be fairly non-trivial, and probably needing official
sanction.
