Default Plasterboard Joints

Hi
I'm replacing a ceiling with plasterboard and wondered whether, when joining
it to the existing plasterboard walls, I need to sand down through the
emulsion to plasterboard before filling and taping the joint.

Any advice please.

Thanks
Roger
