Default Sealing an oil tank connector

I need to reuse a plastic oil tank---it will contain red diesel. How
should I seal the joint formed by the connector (metal 1 inch) being
screwed into the plastic tank? When I took the connector off, to move the
tank, it appeared to have PTFE tape on. Would this be ordinary plumbers
PTFE tape? Would it, on its own, make a good seal?
