Default Seal? Brass screw fitting to cast iron boiler

Hi,

What should I use to seal a BSP TAPER brass fitting to a cast iron boiler
tapping. I have PTFE tape, I don't have hemp.

When I have not got some hemp to hand, I use a piece of coarse 'hairy'
string that I know as sisal. Cut a few inches off and tease out to a bundle
of single strands. Add the boss-white and use as normal.

Bob

Yes, I know sisal. Were you a Boy Scout?

Most just call it string.

I found some threads in the newsgroup on the subject.

Interesting stuff on imperial/metric sizes. It seems that in the UK imperial
size relates to the bore or inside diameter of the tube.

Here in Ireland pipe and fittings are imperial, although it refers to the
outside diameter of pipe.

Thus 1/2", 3/4" and 1" available, but newer copper and brass is stamped 14.7
mm, 21 mm and 27.4 mm.
