Default Moron needs work

Has anyone watched that little dick-head on "The worst jobs in history"?

The moron has set out to colour the past ugly. E.g. after defining the
size of an acre (As much land as can be ploughed in a day) and the size
of a peasant's farm (2 or 3 acres) the dope says that the said peasant
would spend his life doing ploughing (bloody awful attempt at a very
nasty portrayal of something any fool would have done better with his
bare hands.)

Get back to dancing around toilets in other peoples back yards Tony, you
oaf.

I know enough about ploughing to know that when you get to the end of
the field you can stop.

That if you have only got two acres you have only got two days work.

That sort of thing.

And I know enough about people to understand that if the life becomes a
little boreing sometimes -never mind an unredeeming drudgery,
then people will bugger off out of it and have fun somewhere else.

Not if you have no other food source, I don't think you have any idea at
all, did you see the type of plough they were using. And by the way, field
working did'nt come in until the Enclosure Acts, might pay you to look
that up.If that type of life is too far from realty for you to grasp, I
suggest you read the book, The Road to Wigan Pier. It might make you think
and thank your lucky stars you are alive now.

The beauty of this group is that it allows a lot of things it shouldn't,
and is generally good mannered and urbane with it.

Without these qualities it may be useful, but would be deadly dull.

I don't go to pubs any more, ore anywhere much, and would miss the

Well, quite a few threads move well away from the strict subject of the
thread

Although I wasn't watching it, I had the program on in the background

Let's not forget that "DIY " is a relatively new concept as people have
specialised and become accountants, hairdressers etc.

In days of yore, you more or less had to do everything yourself

I'd say that ploughing fits into this category

**** off shtjdpid.

In days of yore all work was of the diy variety. And the programme had a
good concept but was hammed up by a dick-head telling lies.

I was not commenting on the actual viewpoint which in all honesty is
open to debate. Except that with a virtually unspoiled environment a man
could wonder off almost anywhere in Britain and be perfectly self
sufficient.

I was using Robinson's own words to condemn his attitude. If you saw the
programme you would know straight away what I was talking about. Since
you neither know what I am talking about, the programme was talking
about or what you are talking about, I shall leave you twit.

Half un.

I agree and like this newsgroup for pretty much that quality and eqully
people should be free to say if they think something is too OT. The 'attack
is the best form of defence' attitude is both boring and childish.

I thought the programme was interesting. At least it's not yet another
reality TV show with big-boobed girls and their thonged arse-cracks,
thanks all the same!

Going on what I saw in the programme, the whole way of life back then
was one big DIY experiment. I mean, when you even have to shin down
cliffs to collect gulls' eggs, it all seems a bit of a precarious
existence. They must have been engaging in DIY all the time, as a
little lateral thinking took them one stage further up the
evolutionary ladder. As soon as I saw those oxen and the plough, I
started to ponder about alternative ways to "plough" the field. For
example, build a much larger plough-type implement so that the oxen
could stand on it to weigh it down, then have the contraption plusn
oxen pulled across the surface of the field using further oxen,
possibly using a rudimentary block and tackle, which they must have
been aware of.

Can't say I ever watched more than a couple of the Black Adder
programmes. So he played Baldric did he? You don't suppose he got his
roles mixed up?

I was thinking more of the abject lies the theme of the programme was
running on:

How chickens were supposed to be holy and stealing birds eggs at the sea
side was the only way of making them last, forgetting that gull's eggs
were harvested until very recently in every town that had them but that
such harvests were only seasonal.

Forgetting too even more recent events such as that the eggs he was sent
to collect were planted there by blokes whose idea of entertainment was
dangling over cliffs on ropes.

But back to the aspect of posting about ploughing one's own 2 or 3 acres
or grinding ones own corn for a family of 12 and the terrible time such
drudgery would take:

He showed a team of 2 oxen, one expert ploughman and two herdsmen
dealing with an inept beginner on his first attemp at ploughing a field
that had never seen a plough. Which total moron had the last words on
the subject to the effect that the serf was condemned to this drudgery
all year long.

He had a farm with pigs and chicken which if anyone knows anything about
pigs and chickens will know that the fields would be pretty much tilth
by February even if the pig was dead by January.

Grinding the corn, an onerous job for a busy mother of twelve would take
3 hours. Of course, that three hours spread over 24 could be done by any
one of whichever twelve was not watching TV or playing Waste My Time on
the computer or studying A level psychology in their bedroom.

Even to this day it is possible to get enough to eat on any seashore in
the United Kingdom just by reaching out and picking up some of God's
bounty. How much easier life must have been when there were no taxes and
no fuel controls and a man could walk half a mile anywhere in any
direction to be in a deep wood with enough food and fuel to keep him
alive indefinitely? There are people living in the Arctic circle to this
very day living off the land quite handsomely.

The man's a prat and the programme ill thought out and stupidly
presented.

It's about what you would expect from somonene who is a member of the
labour party.

It's just another bit of political spin showing what will happen If You
Let The Toffs From Snotty Unis Back In.

Hopwever you should be aware that arcahelogical studies of some bodies
in the dark ages does show that possibly slaves were used to grind corn
all day and they died young completely crippled from arthritis.

Life was not an idle thing in those days, but as you saty the daily
round of feedingf pigs and doing woodwork, weeding planting etc etc is
not without its moments - that quick fumble with ethelfreda behind the
cow shed..or brewing the mead. Bit like Big Brother in rags really.

and the programme ill thought out and stupidly
presented.
