Default Bosch Worcester 240 - no spark

With the evening getting colder and colder, a close relative who lives
nearby rang to ask me if I knew anything about boilers.

He is renting a house and the boiler is simply not firing up. There are
various sounds - and there is gas at the cooker! - but no dice.

I have despatched him with a fan heater, which is about all I could do as I
know little or nothing about this boiler (or boilers in general, really!).

Obviously he is getting on to the landlord but is there anything that could
be worth looking at in the interim?

I did look at the BW site - but couldn't quickly find a 240 model - any
hints there would be appreciated. Not sure of its age or anything though it
seems to be a combi.

I have this model---mine's more than 7 years old (no idea by how
much).

Do the POWER and DEMAND neons light up? Does the heating water gauge
show reasonable pressure? Does the fan motor (near the top) run?
Does the pump (near bottom left) run?

The easiest thing to check internally is that the overheat thermostat
hasn't triggered (try pressing the reset button about two inches
behind the centre bottom of the front cover---lift up cover to
remove).

I have the handbooks, but most of the startup diagnostic charts
involve measuring voltages.

Mark,

Thanks for that. I have just been talking to him - the plumber came round a
little while ago - dead fan. Of course, there were 20 different fans on the
van but not for this model! So he will have to shiver until Monday. At the
moment it is a little warmer (around 2.5 last I looked) so not so bad.

I don't think that measuring voltages, etc. is the way to go with a rented
property - I would if it were his own house and boiler (or my own).
