It's a house in Fishlake on Trundle Lane.

My directions were "It's got a caravan on the drive and it's on a left
hand bend so it will not be hard to find"

No house number no house name..

Friends who used to live in Far Bank Lane carried maps for the first 3 years
that they were there, mainly for the surrounding lanes.
I spent a lot of time there cycling and driving and still needed a map at
times.

I've had a number of people who live in rural areas who give me similarly
vague "addresses" when I'm going to fix their computer. I always try to get
a proper postal address (eg house number/name and postcode), and look the
house up on Google Streetview beforehand so I know what I'm looking out for.

I had one guy who seemed reluctant to give me the actual house name, and
when he gave it me, he said "It's called Willow Cottage, but that won't help
you because there isn't a sign on the gate". I thought "how the F do you
expect the emergency services to find you if you need an ambulance in a
hurry?".

My ploy of using Google does sometimes fall foul of Google's blurring of car
number plates, because that often blurs signs with house number/name.
Numbers are easy because if you find neighbours whose signs are not blurred,
you can count houses from them, and interpolate.

The best way of finding a house is if there's a village map. I found a site
that has PDF maps for a lot of villages in parts of North and East
Yorkshire. http://colinday.co.uk/maps/NorthYorks.shtml

When I was an agency van driver nearly 20 years ago, and sometimes
covering for drivers on leave, it became apparent to me that there
were a lot of van drivers who couldn't read maps. It was also the case
that most of the companies I drove for didn't give their drivers road
atlases, either.

My brother's house has no number or street name. Basically, the new part
of the town grew up around it. But has its own post code.

He usually says to a visitor just look out for the carbuncle. As it's an
old house on a hill surrounded by modern ones.

Do the Royal Mail allocate a number to every house? Our house has a name and
no number, as have a lot on our street. They are listed by the names in the
list of matching addresses that retailing websites display when you enter a
postcode.

How are letters addressed to him? Does he give his contact address in the
form "Fred Bloggs, Town, Postcode", and let the local postmen decode the
postcode into the relevant postman's round? What happens if you go onto the
Royal Mail website and do a reverse lookup from his postcode to the matching
address(es)? Are there no matching addresses in his case?

Taxi, or to be more precise private hire drivers, seem to get totally
confused round my way. OK the sat nav tells them they destinated, but since
both sides of the road have parked cars, nobody in the street in a car can
see the house numbers, as the cars are in the way. I strongly suspect the
only way out would be a very tall pole in the front garden with an
illuminated number, but the local yobs would see this as a challenge.

No house number no house name..

My brother's house has no number or street name. Basically, the new part
of the town grew up around it. But has its own post code.

How are letters addressed to him? Does he give his contact address in the
form "Fred Bloggs, Town, Postcode", and let the local postmen decode the
postcode into the relevant postman's round? What happens if you go onto
the Royal Mail website and do a reverse lookup from his postcode to the
matching address(es)? Are there no matching addresses in his case?

Took 90 secs. You probably should have asked an apprentice.

Actually the grid reference you have given is to the correct house. But
the house with the caravan in it's drive on Google maps is in next doors
driveway.

Also a left-hand bend would be a right-hand bend if you were driving
in the opposite direction.

Very clever, but the point is that people should give tradesmen a proper
address.

Google Streetview has never driven down this lane, but the aerial view
is not bad although not showing any caravan.

Bill

In some parts of the country at least, only about 30% of farms have a
sign at the bottom of the lane to the farm.

There is the assumption that I am arriving in the village from a certain

A lot of people are too attached to the property name because it 'adds
value to the property' and refuse to use the number that the Post Office
Address File has allocated to the property.

House numbers are allocated by the District Council (or Equivalent). The
Post Office simply makes use of them. Here, it is an offence not to
display
your house number. -- We don't have one, ;-)

and quite right too... near here there is a road full of big posh houses
with names only ....too posh obviously to have numbers.....I had to
visit a named house one day in pre-computer times and being in Building
control I could have just looked up the OS map before I left but why
should I I thought I had a building warrant with location plan?....I
spent a happy hour trying to find the house on a beautiful summers
day.....I eventually found it and was very late for the
appointment.....told the bloke it was because the street was long and
had no numbers and what did he expect? and his location plan with the
building warrant drawings didn't help because it just showed the
adjacent posh houses with their names...

The Irish Post Codes, Eircodes identify precisely the location of the property. Entering just the Eircode into Google Maps is all it takes.

e.g H91 K6E4. will show you Paddys Bar Galway

They were a long time coming and initially people were reluctant to use them. "Why would I need a post code? The postman knows where I live' Yes but when your house catches fire or you have a heart attack you'll know why you need your post code
