In any case, the virus mutates so you need a new vaccination every year and it frequently doesn't work. "'Flu" is usually what people complain about when they have a cold and want a day off work. It is rarely fatal, or even serious. Max, I'm astonished anyone still thinks that. I would have thought in the current situation everybody would know about the 1918 'Flu pandemic. While the total number of deaths is not clear it is comparable with WW1 that preceded it. And a lot of them were young and healthy (before!) The influenzas since 1918 have been a lot less infective and serious. They are mostly dangerous to certain groups who are offered vaccination, which sometimes works. Last year's boring ordinary didn't make the news flu killed nearly 2000 people in the UK. You've always got to ask the question, beloved of the radio programme/podcast "More or Less": "Is that a big number?" Same for Covid-19. The problem with that is mainly that a lot of people are getting sick at the same time, and require elaborate care to keep them alive and avoid infecting the health care staff. 600,000 people die a year in the UK of various causes. Yes. Most people currently dying of Covid-19 would die within a year. Thats less clear. All very sad, but there you are. |
