Yesterday was Day Minus 4 of the 2019 UK General Election campaign. There
was a yellow warning for wind and rain across the South of England, leading to the cancellation of several major fireworks displays across Kent including the Gillingham one I was intending to go to. There were plenty of fireworks on the campaign trail, though, so lets dive in! Most impactful news dominating the day for the logistics of the coming campaign was that Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson will appear on ITV in a head-to-head debate. Jo Swinson and the Liberal Democrats went ape****, predictably, and demanded to appear also. The SNP, Brexit Party and, I think, the Greens, made similar complaints but Corbyn and Johnson will do well to keep the minor parties off TV; they both need to cast this election as a two horse race and do all they can to minimise losing votes to the outlier parties. Lets take a brief moment (and it will be brief; I dont intend to waste much breath on the Lib Dems (aka the ****ing Lib Dems) as I write throughout this campaign) to consider Jo Swinson and the Liberal Democrats. In 2010, the Lib Dems got into bed with the Tories and spent five years voting through a devastating campaign of austerity. Selling out the youth with their u-turn on tuition fees was the least of the evil they committed. Bedroom tax anyone? They were deservedly hammered by the electorate in 2015, reduced to a rump of 8 MPs. Recovering slightly in 2017, hilariously losing the seat of Nick Clegg in the process, they have since padded out their numbers with defections from the Tories and Change UK. The Lib Dems have long sought to portray themselves as the party of Remain. Alas, theyve had the wind taken out of their sails somewhat by Labour making it Party policy to hold a 2nd referendum once theyve formed a government and negotiated a Labour deal with the EU. Swinson is, understandably, desperate to secure equal-billing with Labour and the Conservatives to try and keep her campaign relevant. Its going to be difficult for her to prevent it from becoming a JC vs BoJo saga, though. Despite her clearly lunatic claims that the Lib Dems hope to take hundreds of seats and form a majority, there are only two possible individuals who might go to see the Queen on the 13th of December, and she aint one of them. Away from Lib Dem nonsense, the Tories had another bad day. The fallout from their faux fracking ban was widely reported, with much hay being made by Labour over the whole sordid scam. Seen through as an electoral stunt essentially immediately, it merely plays into the notion of Tory duplicity that Labour are keen to hammer home. If Boris is scoring own goals as badly as this before the campaign has even officially started, then theyre doomed. My prediction that the Conservative campaign might pan out to be 2017 on acid looks stronger with every passing minute! Dominic Grieve, the exiled Tory MP, went public with demands for the government to release a report on Russian political interference that it has allegedly sat on since September. This is a genuinely huge story and its no surprise to see why Boris is loth to put the report in the public domain at the eve of a General Election. But the fact that there is an election happening in 6 weeks, its absolutely essential that the public has sight of these facts. Expect to see this story rage over the next couple of days. Thematically related to the above Russia report was the news that Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnsons deranged top advisor, is potentially a Russian agent. Sounds insane, right? Well, he is apparently barred from accessing the most sensitive of secret government material precisely due to concerns over his time in Russia in the 1990s. Couple this with the breaking news that the Metropolitan Police were handing a file of evidence to the CPS with regards the Vote Leave campaigns alleged breaking of electoral law and we have a looming ****show for Boris, who along with Michael Gove fronted the Vote leave referendum campaign. Again, the campaign hasnt even started yet and the spectre of Russian interference, spying, and criminal prosecution is dogging the Tory top team. ****ing Nora! On the Labour front, it was a good day. The debate about the obscenity of billionaires continued in the press and on social media, both for and against, but whatever way you cut it, its a good argument from Labours perspective for people to be having, focusing on inequality and the evils of capitalism rather than Brexit. Labour is loudly campaigning on a radical and transformative agenda so it absolute suits them down to the ground to have the role of billionaires analysed and critiqued. Jeremy Corbyn was on the road, appearing at packed rallies through the day. This is where Corbyn absolutely excels and the more of these events he does, the more that broadcast media and social media will be flooded with fantastic video clips of a mass movement fully behind their leadership. The polls still, stupefyingly, show a commanding lead for the Tories but it doesnt take much objective thinking to look at whats actually happening and seeing that Labour have the upper hand. And the campaign hasnt even started yet! -- M0TEY // STC www.twitter.com/ukradioamateur |

Rather than setting fire to the money for you to watch burning, wouldn't it be 'better' to do good / practical / lasting things in the local community, even if it was a community / LA sponsored event? I guess I've just never really got the whole 'passive spectator' thing, preferring to be hands on or not at all (in most cases). shrug Cheers, T i m |
