Problem reading USB attached disk drives

I'm trying to read some old SATA drives using a Liteon Ultra enclosure.
windows disk management (Win10 Pro)sees the disk but says it needs to be
initialised, but trying to initialise as MBR fails.
Any ideas as to how to procede?
TIA Iain

Mount it in Linux and hope that can see the drive properly.

You may already have damaged it by trying to allow Win10 to write to it.
A write protect switch is very handy when doing data recovery.

Boot a live linux CD and use better tools

Out of iunterest why are you usin an enclosure? isn't it easier to link
the sata cables to your motherboard?

Will try Linux if I can find a CD. Using an enclosure as position of
computer israther restricted. Enclosure has a slip on lid that makes it
easy to change disk.
thanks for your input.

Short answer. Are you sure the old SATA drives are NTFS and not in fact
FAT 32 ?

Googling "Win 10" and "FAT32" may answer your question and offer some
possible solutions assuming Linux doesn't do the trick. Which it may well
do, for all I know.

You're fortunate WIN10 refused to initialise the drives as that really would have
been curtains.

You can make a bootable USB stick. It'll probably boot faster too.

Thats saying that it looks like it isnt formatted.

but trying to initialise as MBR fails.

Likely because that drive has died.

Any ideas as to how to procede?

If it has died, you're stuffed.

Much easier to drop the drive(s) into a docking station and plug that into a
USB3 port.

Win10 sees fat32 drives fine.

Yes Windows always attempts to plonk one of its .ini files on the disc and
this can corrupt them.
I've had similar problems with usb to ide on windows 7, yet it works on xp.
I'm thinking maybe the wrong driver is being used. Also make sure, if the
interface is capable to use one of the usb3 ports or you will be there for
the duration!

You are the second person to mention CD, are you sure he should boot off
a floppy.

Why don't people use USB sticks? I haven't had a CD for a decade.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Turns out that the drives were
paperwieghts. I put a known good drive in the enclosure and it worked.

No it can not. Its just a file.

There is no driver involved.

That’s not true either. I used it with usb2 for a long time
before usb3 showed up.
