We have one of those solar powered PIR lights on the front (South facing) wall. During the summer it works quite well, often giving quite a lot of light many times through the night as people walk past. Tonight, it's just stuck on a low glimmer so useless. ;-( I think it takes std AA sized cells and currently has what are probably not particularly good quality / capacity. I might try swapping them out for some Eneloop or just higher capacity NiMh's in the hope that might buy me some time between sunny spells. I don't think it will help though as whilst there has been quite a bit of sun over the last few days, it doesn't seem to have any power, as noted by a complete lack of movement in my Crookes radiometer (in a South facing window). Cheers, T i m On a slightly different theme, have you seen these stove top "fans". They are presumably a peltier generator and indeed look impressive when operating. One pub I used to frequent had one. I do not think it had much value as far as circulating air went though. As these things cost over £60, I wonder if they may be the next item on the list after the PPI claimlines have been pensioned off :-) AB --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus |

See https://www.stirlingengine.co.uk/d.a...VULCANSTOVEFAN silly idea anyway. hot air rises...cold air is drawn to the fire..the hot air cools a little and comes down furthest from te fire. See https://www.stirlingengine.co.uk/d.a...VULCANSTOVEFAN Thanks, I honestly thought it was a few of those peltier slabs on the base though. Interesting but the pub has closed now so I cannot investigate futher. Simple but in all honesty the Stirling engine does not seem too intuitive in operation, it gives a route for a bit of research as to its beginnings though. I do get the impression that the fan would be fairly useless in most situations though, unless of course there was a small hole in the rook directly above the stove. I suppose the net gain would be zero, unless the thing had a squeaky bearing and some acoustic energy was lost to the exterior?
