Brittle die castings of aluminium were referred to as "Monkey Metal" when I was a lad.
One that springs to mind was and aluminium box spanner that Halfords sold to cyclists. Guaranteed to break on first use.

We used to use the term to refer to zinc alloy castings - the sort of
thing that stayed intact so long as the outer skin and plating remained
but crumbled away otherwise.

A google on zinc alloy and monkey metal will bring up a number of
musical instrument and model makers references.

Isn't the 'pig' bit a reference to the casting of iron ingots, that look

I always used it for a poor quality casting that once it breaks you can
see a very grainy structure on the break. Ford contina Mk3 door handles
that easy broke in half were made from this s***.

Generic term used to be pot metal. Think one brand name got changed to
Muckite.

I've a feeling there were different mixes used, as some seemed to last
rather better than others.

Some people collect Dinky Toys, pre WW2 ones in even quite battered
condition fetch fairly high prices as the mix to form the alloy wasnt very
good and even if one was left untouched it still cracked into pieces due to
metal fatigue setting in so one that managed not to self destruct may be a
rare survivor.
PostWW2 they were not perfect but had improved enough to last the time of
most childhoods.

This prewar tram is a typical example of one with problems.
https://goo.gl/images/1KJ12D

Didnt the term start with the metal being used to make cheap souvenirs
trinkets in India etc during the time
of British rule many of which would have been of Monkeys? They were at
the bottom end of the market with the better ones being made of Brass or
Bronze.

Not so. Its virtue - if it had one - is it cast very well indeed.
