in the 50's my old dear went looking for a town gas leak at a holiday
flat
with a match....she found it and a nice flame emanated from the pipe work
......


I remember seeing gas pipe fitters doing that when I was a child. In
those days I might have been able to buy stuff to blow bubbles but we
did not use washing up liquid.


I saw a gas fitter doing that in the 80s. That's how you checked your
joints.
