OT Scary Road Layout - Coventry
Hi all
It's a month or so since the visit but.... My lad is at Warwick University and has a shared house in south Coventry. Whenever we have visited the Uni so far, we must have been a bit further south. This time we were following the sat-nav and probably clipping the south East corner of the city. I have never been in such a scary road system. Imagine you are travelling round one of the large roundabouts where you are given insufficient time to change lanes between exits. Then add the complication that the lanes joining and leaving the roundabout are alternately connected to underpasses and fly overs. Then to add insult to injury, vehicles are carving across the lanes in both directions to access slip roads. Has anyone been through this horrendous road system? Phil I suspect you mean the Baginton roundabout/flyover on the A45 , if you think its bad now you should have seen it before. It is actually an improvement for most locals. |

If you're attentive and competent all is fine. Birmingham has similar style of junctions. Leave sufficient room in front for a car to nip in. Adjust speed and distance accordingly. The Birmingham equivalent suggests you stay in the RH lane for normal driving with the LH lane for leaving or entering the carriageway. Roads and junctions are being more and more sanitised to the lowest common denominator of driving ability. Lets hope the current system stays as it is. |

Yup, the ring road in particular is an inspired bit of design - just not in a good way. Heh. It's only excitingt at middling traffic levels, when stuff is dense but moving. It's "interesting" at times, and the first place I remember seeing speed cameras. Before that it was very interesting indeed, but most of it is technique: leave a right=sized gap and let traffic merge, and don't hesitate. Coventry ring road? It's "interesting" at times, and the first place I remember seeing speed cameras. Before that it was very interesting indeed, but most of it is technique: leave a right=sized gap and let traffic merge, and don't hesitate. Often been cited as a way not to build a road TPTB know, with hindsight, that they got it wrong and learned the lesson for future roads But it's too late now for this one. tim |

Driving ability is being dumbed down, not helped with decrepit councillors unable to drive and wet themselves on installing traffic lights. I too think it is fine. When I have a problem with this style of junction it's probably time I simply stopped driving. |

But doesnt label A461 as that much, so you have to zoom out till you see that added to that one. Pretty poor UI IMO.
