My Servis washing machine (should it be called a Pain Wave??) stops
about a third of the way thru the spin cycle. It pumps out most of the
water, to just below the level of the door, and then stops. I cleaned
out the filter/trap (if that's what you call the thingy on the front
you can unscrew), which was full of calcium deposits. It worked a
couple of times and then the problem re-appeared. Is the problem
likely to be a blockage elsewhere triggering the pressure switch or am
I on the wrong track?

If the filter was full of gunge, then it is more than likely the water level
detection system is also blocked. Turn the power off (unplug) and remove
the back plate from the machine.

Take the waste hose out of the drain system and lower it into a large bowl
or basin to remove the rest of the water that is left in the machine. If no
water flows through the pipe, then try blowing down it and listening for
bubbles inside the machine, then lower the hose back into the basin. The
hose has to be taken as low as you can to the floor to get all the water
out.

With the back plate off the machine and looking near the bottom of the drum,
you should see a small plastic bottle shaped thing which is connected to the
drum and has a thin rubber hose attached to the top of it. You should be
able to see through the bottle with the help of a torch and find out if it
has anything in it. If it is pretty clear then the problem lies further
along the system. If it looks like it has gunge stuck in it then it needs
cleaned out.

If it does look like it has gunge in it, then you can remove the bottle by
pressing the spring clip on the thin rubber hose with a pair of pliers and
gently pulling it off the top of the bottle. Removing the bottle itself is
simple enough by gently twisting as you pull it out away from the drum.

To clean the bottle out you need to pop it in a bowl and pour hot, not
boiling, water through it until all the gunge is removed. Make sure it is
all clean and clear before putting it back in the machine. Also remember to
press the spring clip together with the pliers before pressing the hose back
on the top of the bottle.

Check the front filter again before you plug the machine back in to test it.
Stand clear of the machine while you do the tests.

The test consists of turning the timer control to the final rinse mark on
the dial, any final rinse mark will do, and then turn the machine on and
leave it to go through the cycle by itself. If it does the final rinse OK,
then you can put everything back together, remember to unplug the machine
before touching it, and hopefully it will stay clear for many months. If it
doesn't finish the rinse cycle on its own, then get back to us and we'll
talk you through the rest of the things that could be causing this problem.
