Default Gas cost calculator

Given two gas meter readings, e.g. 6789 and 6913, what is the formula
for calculating the cost of the gas used (using typical UK gas price)?

Refer to your supplier and ask for their tariff figures or look at
your last bill. The meter may be measuring in cubic metres or in
deprecated cubic feet. You can then work out the amount of heat in
kW.h using the conversion that they give and add in any factors such
as standing charges. You pay by the kW.h

Some suppliers charge different prices for the first N kWh

On the back of the gas bill

Gas units used
multiply by imperial to metric conversion factor of 2.83
multiply by volume conversion factor of 1.022640
multiply by calorific value of 40.1 (Megajoules per cubic metre)
divide by kilowatt hour conversion factor of 3.6
= kilowatt hours used

124 units
x 2.83 = 350.92
x 1.022640 = 356.86
x 40.1 = 14390.47
/ 3.6 = 3997 kWh

@ 2.659 p/kWh = GBP106.29
+ VAT of 5% = 5.31

Note that some of the factors (esp the calorific value) may vary from time
to time and place to place.
