I would guess a condensate drain from a boiler - originally just allowed
to run down the facia (hence the staining), and later "plumbed" into the
soil stack.


I particularly like the informal U-bend he's ensured the pipe has.

Are you thinking what I am thinking? ie a cold winter and the homeowner is
going to be up a certain creek?

I am of the opinion that this is the condensate (I believe the blow off is
bodged higher up in a similar manner). It should not take long at minus 8 to
block up with ice on that U bend.
