My first thought was that it was a reference to a bench vice jaw
protector, normally fabricated from sheet aluminium to slip over the jaws
of the vice to protect the workpiece from being marked by the grip
pattern on the jaw faces.

This is a memory from my schooldays over half a century back when CDT
used to simply be called "Metalwork". I'm afraid google was absolutely
useless on this point as I'm sure most of you already know.

A boxed Belfast type communal sink usually on a common landing was called
"jaw box" because years ago tenement flats did not have inside water /sinks
so people gathered at a main washing area where all could wash clothes etc
.... as the gathered they would natter and gossip...hence "jaw box" .....
