Other sources state that this was part of a continuing army operation
against terrorists in the central mountain region; an area far from any
tourist areas. The army has been trying to dislodge terrorists from the
region for several years and nobody in authority is linking this event
to the attack in June.

That part of the country had a fairly constant army presence, with ID
checks on the road, when we were there a couple of years ago. Tunisia's
big problem is not internal - the Arab Spring revolution was a success,
and real democracy resulted for the first time since independence - but
that it has a massively long border (much of it through desert) with
Algeria, and the rest of the land border is with Libya.

Gafsa is a fairly poor and depressed part of the country - a lot of
phosphate mining industry in the area, and it's a long way from anything
that'll really drag package tourons from the coast.

On the other hand. the whole point of this was to cause them to lose their
core business, and that has been accomplished.
a weak economy is ripe for revolution.

However, the bulk of that is German and French tourists and they have
not been recalled.

Indeed. I think UK tourists are about 5%. So 5% of 15%... 0.75% of the
total economy...

But, whether or not the FCO and their equivalent have put the shutters
up, the unrest will affect the whole tourism sector - and the rest of the
economy.
