Default USB power packs...

To recharge/run mobile devices 'in the field'...

EBay offers 10000 mah capacity for 20 odd quid.. eg 'Floureon' does that seem OK?

Some also have solar panels on... are the solar panels worth bothering with?

Any other experiences, guidance etc on the topic appreciated.

TIA

Tad pricey IMO.

Depends on how you use it, how often you are away
from the mains or a car etc you can charge it from.

Any other experiences, guidance etc on the topic appreciated.

Again, it depends on how you use it and how much portability matters etc.

no link ?

I've used one that I got from RS but it was a lower capacity.
It's charged my ipod OK.

depends on the claims and whether you'll be leaving it in sunlight for most of the day and of course how much extra they 'charge' for it.
is it a light charge ;-)

Any other experiences, guidance etc on the topic appreciated.

I'd go for RavPower for that sort of price - I had one and it was bloody
excellent. Don't need it much now I have a Note 3 (the Galaxy S2 was a
bitch for eating batteries) - but I did dig it out for a walking holiday.

The biggest

They do not sell my current one now (3 years old) but I went for the
biggest capacity at the time. Nice thing was that one port was high
current output and it did actually charge a Samsung at a sensible rate.

Remember the good ol' days when you could simply clip a fresh battery into

I bought a TeckNet Power Bank 12000mAh for about GBP 15 or so, and
it's been fine.

They will do what they say, but IMO:

1. The rated capacity is what they store, not what you'll get out of
them (they're not 100% efficient). So 12,000mAh is probably around
10,000 mAh. Which is still plenty.

2. They need a minimum current draw to stay on. Mine will charge a
phone or tablet (obviously, because that's what it's meant for), and
it will run a raspberry pi which draws about 0.5 amps. But it won't
run an Arduino uno which draws about 0.05 amps: it runs for about ten
seconds then switches off.

3. Many/most of these USB power banks can't be charged at the same
time as providing power. So you can't use them as a ghetto UPS for
USB-powered devices.

It was a simple job on my last phone. Not so easy on this one. And isn't
it impossible with some?

Same with my previous phone, a Nokia N95 8GB.

Not so easy on this one. And isn't it impossible with some?

Yes, it isn't possible with any iphone or the latest Samsung Galaxy S6
either.

But there are still phones where you can if you want to be able to do that.

Yes, the trend is towards fixed batteries. (the one in my phone is,
though it seems an easy enough job to replace it if it starts to die)

I don't think even with easily replaceable batteries I ever carried a
spare though. It's one of those things that gets some people chuntering
away on tech websites, but the number of people who have actually ever
carried a round a spare battery must be very small.

Depends how in the field you intend to be and for how long.

EBay offers 10000 mah capacity for 20 odd quid.. eg 'Floureon' does that seem OK?

The sweet spot is probably a smaller 4Ah unit if size & weight is an
issue. If you have a car nearby an adapter for that wins hands down.

Some also have solar panels on... are the solar panels worth bothering with?

Possibly if you have something that needs to work in a wilderness or
always be ready as an emergency backup if there is a mains failure. A
couple of thin mirrors will improve the solar panel output at the risk
of cooking it. Mine (a freebie from some conference) has saved the day
when our house mains went down with my mobile almost out of juice.

Weather and dust proofing is also a factor if it has to survive the
rough and tumble of an outdoor wilderness existence. I have wrecked a
mobile phone by fresh water immersion.

Any other experiences, guidance etc on the topic appreciated.

Depending on what you want it for there are endless choices. I now have
one with solar panels that sits in a window most of the time and a
smaller compact rectangular one that requires charging before use.

I don't either. But then the thread is about a device to re-charge a
device 'in the field' so presumably most likely a phone?
