Default Roof space alterations ....

I live in a modern house and I wanted a room in the roof space.....I cut all
the useless unused members in the gang nail truss and nailed on members to
form a square room.....This room is accessed by a stair open from a
bedroom....THEY have stopped the work stating that I have weakened the roof
and the bedroom is a fire hazard....how can this be ? ......

his house fell down.

He posts on uk.radio.amateur. I admit to sending him a few posts last week
thinking he was 1/2 okay. I thought wrong.

Gravity is your problem (well, one of them anyway). Ensure you turn it off. If you can't
do this yourself then get your local council to do it for you. Don't take no for an
answer.

Two straightened 6' steel rings (as used to support NCB underground coal
tunnels) and bolted together to form a 12' lintol (to support the bedroom
floor after a brick, ground floor partition wall had been removed to make a
bigger lounge area) are far stronger than 'railway lines'. ;-)

Yes, I have seen that done on my travels - and those rings were still
holding the bedroom floor up when I revisited the property some ten years
later!

And the above really did happen - in the very late 1960s or early 1970s
mind, and it would be interesting to see if they are still there.

Railway line beams are excellent.
So long as you have means of cutting them.
