Yes been bad tempered all day this feed. Some groups work, others not then
it all went off. Seems to be catching up now though.

I assume that Eternal September had a hissy fit, as traffic is now arriving
again ?

Subscribe to alt.uk.test and send your test postings there in future.
There seems to have been rather a lot of 'test' postings infesting
these news groups lately which is becoming a little bit irritating to
say the least.

It's simply bad netiquette to send test posts to ordinary news groups
which is why test news groups have been set up as part of the news
group hierarchy such as the alt.uk.test one already mentioned. You can
post as many test postings there as you like without upsetting anyone.

Test NGs aren't just for testing that your postings are being
propagated, they can be used to verify that you have successfully
stopped your AV from using your sig file as a free advert for example.

Or indeed, any one of the 227 test groups;

huge@amun:~/Prog/News$ grep '\.test' NIN_active.txt | wc -l
227

And how would that prove that Eternal September were taking a feed of this
newsgroup???????????

You ask the news administrator. You download a copy of their active
file. What you do not do is bother the grownups with your whining.

Would the Huge refer to your ego by any chance

Maybe it's Scottish, like 'Poon' for pound?

But would anyone reply telling you your test was OK with them? Does
anyone read test groups if not testing themselves?

Yes, there are auto-responders that do that ...

Actually, a quick search found it is a Manx word!

Manx
Verb

poost

past participle of poose

Adjective

poost

married

Almost inevitably Urban Dictionary has some, umm, interesting definitions:

It wouldn't.

To confirm whether or not Eternal September were taking a feed of this
newsgroup its simply necessary to check the timing of the latest post
for this NG in your newsreader.

If your newsreader shows the latest post on a busy group such as this
as being made yesterday, then it's a waste of time posting anything as
you won't see your own meassge or any replies assuming your message gets
through.

So you then need to switch to your back-up server, assuming you have one,
and use that in the meantime.

Until such time as your newsreader shows the latest post for this NG
on Eternal September as having been made minutes ago when presumably
the previous problem with this particular NG at least, has been solved.

But, afaik, there isn't any such with alt.uk.test. You simply check
the NG a short time after posting a test missive and see for yourself
whether your test message arrived ok and displayed as intended (sans
html ****e or AV advert or with a correctly formed sig line).

And, of course, you can post a reply to your own post to verify
proper sig line handling and quoting by your news client. This is one
usage case where it isn't regarded as bad netiquette to reply to your
own posts. :-)

So use uk.test, fairly sure a responder monitored that last time I used
it ... yes, one in Italy just replied to me ...
