COB or not for LED
Replaced a large number of QH lights with LED, been mixed bag regarding
results. Now need to change out 12 in the kitchen ... these are all 50W wide angle. Are the multi LED (80/90 chip) type lights better than 3 x 3W or even the single COB ? Is one type better than the other for given power rating (light output, rearwards heat, longevity etc.?) -- UK SelfBuild: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/UK_Selfbuild/ |

The COB ones I have are an array of about 6x6 LEDs on the board, but you don't see the individual chips as they're embedded in the "yellow plasticy stuff". No complaints (since I gave up trying to dim them) they tick a little as they're warming up. |

Are the multi LED (80/90 chip) type lights better than 3 x 3W or even the single COB ? I've fitted quite a few of the multi-LED downlighters now, and am very pleased with them. IMHO they are equivalent to the original 35W halogens in terms of beam spread and overall brightness, whereas the one 3-LED one I bought for the shower light a couple of years ago isn't. Is one type better than the other for given power rating (light output, rearwards heat, longevity etc.?) Only had mine a few months, but no failures yet; not that there should be. They came with a 5-year guarantee. I think longevity will depend greatly on where the lamps are sourced; cheapo models will have much less electronics inside etc and although will look the same at the outset, will die much sooner. -- David |

I've just done a lighting refit in my hall - 4 x 1 x 2+ metres - using 4 off MR16 3W COB LED bulbs in double downlighter holders. The COB bulbs have a noticeably bigger light spread than single element MR16 type LED lights, and light the area excellently. The holders are machined from solid aluminium and barely get warm. The one gripe I do have and am querying this with the supplier is that the supposed 'Warm White' is harsher than other LED lights I have. Rob |

Hi,I'm currently evaluating LED down lighter options for SWMBO'S refurbished kitchen. Other poster's experiences are extremely valuable. Please, any chance that posters robgraham, lobster, andyburns.. could identify the exact downlighter makes/models/watts etc that their posts concern? TIA |

Su I've used both the following (ie both 240V and 12V versions - I can't see anything between them, performance-wise) http://tinyurl.com/b54u7ke (or http://www.ledhut.co.uk/gu10-smd-led-220- lumens-45-watts-equiv-best-internet-price.html) http://tinyurl.com/d89k386 (or http://www.ledhut.co.uk/spot-lights/mr16-led- bulbs/mr16-smd-led-20-pice-best-internet-price.html) Both were the WW (warm white) versions HTH -- David |
