By population, Reading, according to

Huddersfield is in 11 place.

Presumably the point is that cities are excluded?

This has it Reading:

These include cities and have it London:

That's no longer one of the criteria. Brighton has no cathedral.

A town is not designated as a city because of it having a cathedral.
(It used to be).

It's based on population size and various other criteria

A cathedral is the seat ("cathedra") of the bishop of the diocese. If
a particular diocese has two or more cities clearly he can't have have
two "seats" (that would be greedy) so the remaining cities normally
have a minster instead.

There's no cathedral in Stoke-on-Trent, either, but that *is* a city.
and they've got a charter granted in 1925 to prove it.

And, Brian, it only takes a Royal Commission and an application to make
a new city.

Sheffield didn't get a cathedral until 1926, 33 years after it became a city in 1893.

Unitary Authorities are not necessarily towns e.g. Borough of Cheshire
East includes the towns of Crewe Nantwich Sandbach Macclesfield
Knutsford Wilmslow etc etc.

Good question!

Before I went to live in Reading, almost everyone I knew said: "You
don't wanna go THERE! It's a DUMP!" But I went there (I didn't have
much choice if I wanted to keep my job), and, if there was ever any
doubt in the matter, I can now indeed confirm that it's a dump.

The traffic wardens in Stoke on Trent are as thick as pig ****. The electric
shutters at one of their underground carparks packed in and I was sent to
fix them. And yes he did give me a ticket whilst I was fixing them. The PCSO
that turned up said if I did not calm down he would call the police and have
me arrested.

All I said to the warden was "I know your are only doing your job, but it's
a ****s job and only a **** would do it". That is not IMHO a breach of the
peace but a fact. I then said the same thing to the PCSO.
