I'm sure it will eventually come out that they are not alone in doing such
things. There does seem to be a human trait of out of sght out of mind in
this world.

Not sure why this is particularly newsworthy now - it's been known
for decades there's loads of nuclear junk there. Also in some of
the former USSR countries which have no money to deal with the
legacy they've been left with.

There are a thousand or so abandoned/lost/stolen thermal decay reacters
which were used to power lighthouses. Theives often cut them up with
angle griders for the scrap metal, and die a few days later. Even
the authorities have dropped several in failed salvage attempts,
only to watch them melt their way into the ice and dissappear from
sight.

Agree with Andrew, why is it a story today and not yesterday, or any
other time in the past goodness knows how many years?

That article is essentially having a pop at the oil industry, rather than coming up with any fresh news about the
Russian submarine concerned.

well since the sea is a very big place and its already radioactive from
natural uranium and thorium, I doubt whether a bit more will make a
noticeable difference.

Bellona is not a good source if you want to learn about radiation
and its hazards. All fish are less radioactive than you.

The only problem with nuclear waste in the Sea is the blackmail from the
environmentalists. Bellona makes a lot of money from it.
Frederic Hauge met at the yearly conference for the fishing industry in
Norway and told in very direct words that unless you hire me as a
consultant I will tell that your fish is radioactive. Thus he became a
consultant and today he is very rich.

ISTM, because they are now exploring how to do something about it.

Because they're about to start drilling for oil in that region, and
presumably might disturb something?

More important is this old news found in the Norwegian version
of Wikipedia and translated by me:
On the way to a conference in 1989 with Morten Harket, Hauge was
arrested in Osaka, Japan after customs officials found six grams of
hashish in his cigarette pack. The case was later dismissed. [2] In
2006, Hauge enough again arrested, this time after a police dog was
aware of ten grams of hashish in his pockets, the Poles festival
outside Larvik. [3] [4] This time was Hauge fined of ten
thousand kroner for storage.

This has been known for years - the Bellona.no site has excellent coverage of it, in English too.

The Russians didn't do anything the West didn't do, but they did it on a sea coast with bad weather, rather than a dry desert, and they also did it on a rather bigger scale.

Here the scale does not matter because
fish has no lungs and then
fish do not smoke.

Fish also do not eat dumped reactors and
is very well protected as 10 cm of water
reduces gamma-radiation by 50%.

Men do smoke and can then be damaged by
smoke and radon.
