Mending a plastic knob
I have a fairly cheap shower with plastic windows.
One of the knobs holding a shower window to the top rail has broken. The part that is broken is a hard plastic "washer", 1in in diameter and 1/4in thick. The two parts fit together pretty well. I tried sticking them together with UHU contact glue, but this came apart again almost at once. What is the best glue for this purpose? Is Superglue appropriate? Any advice or suggestions gratefully received. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College Dublin |

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received. If it's PVC, PVC pipe cement. You need a solvent weld to keep anywhere near the same strength, not a glue. Presumably it has split apart roughly across the diameter. If you really do have to repair it, it will probably need a bit assistance from a 'strap' around the circumference. As it's 1/4" thick, you may be able to file a groove around it, so when the two halves are put together, it resembles a pulley wheel. If it is hard plastic, superglue may be suitable basically holding the two halves together. The 'strap' could be several turns of thin, bare (and tinned?) copper wire (stripped multi-strand mains wire?) with the final join being twisted and given a quick spot of solder. You can then fill the groove up with more superglue (or polyester resin/paste), and when hard, finish it off with a touch of sandpaper. It will then probably outlast the other knobs! -- Ian |
