Default Shelving wood...

Where's the best sort of place to get this, had a look in B&Q and it seems
very expensive for what it is.

Looking at shelves at least 8-10in deep

B&Q usually is. timber merchants, wickes, wherever's nearby. Prices
are very low for cheap shelving materials, and pricey for some. I'd
skip mdf, as well as looking lousy its very water vulnerable IMLE.

And bends.

Cheapest is chip-board, then ply and then soffit. Soffit looks best
barge board even better but how many lengths do you need and long do
you want them?

Softwood bull nose window board may be a bit thick (25mm or 32mm seems
the choice) about GBP6/metre.

I use 18mm blockboard. The last lot was veneered in Alder and finishes a
bit like cheap Mahogany.

Now that everyone has a router, cutting a fancy trim strip in hardwood
for the front edge is simple.

I would support across the full width at a minimum of 1m.
