Default OTish Density of hazel

I was pollarding a hazel of ours that was well out of control and an
eight inch diameter piece of wood fell into the mill stream. To my
surprise it sank. When I went into retrieve it, I realised that its
density was only just greater than water as it was very easy to bring
to the surface. Still I was surprised that any wood that grows in this
country is that dense.
