Hi all.
One of our local timber yards had an offer to good to miss last week. Solid white oak flooring at £30 sqm Grade AB. 18mm x 130mm. And in the last 3 days I tore up the old boards and nailed the new flooring down. The room in which it has been laid hs 75mm sq joists at 50mm centres running from the chimney breast wall to the opposite. The room is about 3.7m at its widest narowing for the chimney breast & hearth. The joists are supported at the ends and on 2 sleeper walls at 1m and there are smaller joists extending from the edge of the hearth parallel to the sleeper walls. All in all the 3.7m joists are supported at 5 points including the ends. The 'chimney breast lengths' are 2.9m long and supported at 4 points. The room is 5m long into a large bay window. I think in most cases there would be nothing much to worry about. However, in my case none of the new flooring lengths were longer than 90cm (most lengths were 80cm) I didn't fix any plywood under the new boards and there were no noggins between the joists. The new floor is obviously less stiff and when I walked on it this morning before switching on the tv I could hear some slight creaking. Is there a nasty problem for me in the future? Thanks.
