doors doors doors, where to get big ones!
 

I wish bigger was better when it came to internal doors as then they
would be so popular I'd be able to walk into my local DIY store and
buy what I need!...

In my victorian terrace I have doors which I want to replace as they
are the horibble looking laminated brown fake wood effect ones that
look like something out of the 70's...

The problem is their size!.. It seems people used to be alot taller
and fatter in victorian days as these doors are massive compared to
anything I can find i standard DIY sheds.

Does anyone know where I can get some basic hardboard, white, panel
effect doors (which in any other size you can pick up for £20 or so)
but in the following size...

33" wide (possibly 32", I cant reember off the top of my head... and
80" tall as opposed to the standard 78"

Any help or advice or anyone who has suffered the same problem please
advise... I am worried thsi is going to turn out to be costly... I
only need 3 of the things!

Typical, I finally post it and then look on the WIckes site as I have
been doing for weeks and they appear to have what I need... forget my
ramblings!!

Any info on doors etc woudl still be useful though as its always handy
to know a good supplier etc...originally the idea was to have stripped
pine doors, but I definately cant find those in this size anywhere,
not new anyway...

The ones sold by Wickes are made by Premdor http://www.premdor.co.uk/
who have a much wider range (including larger sizes for some doors)
and their website will give you a local stockist.

6'8" x 2'8" - still available if you go to a timber merchant or
specialist door supplier

has been sold to Wickes by Premdor costs only £20 in Wickes... isnt
the middle man supposed to make it more expensive, so to make a
profit? Obviously Wickes buy them in bulk at a greatly reduced
rate..But surely not so much reduced that they can sell at a quarter
of the price?

rather sell them by the lorry-load to Wickes, so the price they offer to
you is punitively high.

That makes sense... just seems a little odd in this case as their
website is very "consumer friendly" and looks like tey are trying to
attract people in to buy...

Oh well, i'll get my doors from wickes unless they dont stock the big
ones then I will resort back to Premdor!

Oh FFS, you're moaning about one hideous type of door installed by the
insane DIY fanatics of the 1970s only to consider replacing them with
hideous 1980s hardboard and paper crap.

Get some doors made by the local joiner, who can do a decent job. I've
had to replace an extremely non-standard door in a Georgian house and
I'm utterly grateful that we had the sense to get a proper one made
rather than to try and fit a recent pastiche.

The price through my local stockist (Blanchfords, Princes Risborough)
was very similar to what I would have paid in Wickes and included free
delivery. I was advised that if I only wanted 4, it would be cheaper
to buy 5 and throw one away so there is some element of discount/
minimum order at work. As it happens I did want 5 so it was not an
issue for me.

Forgot to add, be careful you are comparing like for like. Premdor do
the same pattern doors (at least in some ranges) in the cheap and
cheerful cardboard and wet string variety (ie similar to Wickes)
through to fire door quality.

Oh Steve - If only the world was as black and white as that!...

The old doors were literally hidious and brown and not at all in
keeping with the house. In an ideal world I'd have a joiner come round
and hand craft me some timber doors to original specs... And I'd
probably pay someone to hand build my kitchen, infact I'd have a local
"crafts person" in to do everything... I'm on your wavelength there!

Unfortunately money does come into the equation....and I cant justify
paying out that amount of money on doors, when I can get cheap ones at
a very small fraction of the price and be satisfied with the
result.... Perhaps then once day when money isnt quite as tight I can
consider the crafted option....

Well done for getting your door hand crafted! I'm glad you had the
money to do so.... Perhaps if you had a houseful of doors to replace
in a house that you were only looking to live in for 5 years or so you
wouldnt have gone to the trouble....Or mayb you would, but I have my
own opinions on that logic!

Most products are worth less than yuo pay fo them!... they are only
worth what people are willing to pay for them... And I think for a bog
standard door that will vastly improve the look of my home £25 a door
is cheap and worth it. As I said before, a handmade timber door would
be the ideal, but is not practical in my situation, as is probably the
case with 90% of the population..

I guess your custom built door cost a little more than the £25 I was
talking about then?.. Nice idea though

A real building/timber merchant is what you need.
Common standard sizes are 30,32& 33 x 78 &80".
