Default DIY 6V charger?

Is it possible to DIY up a 6V charger for old car batteries, or to buy one
cheap?

Quite a lot of chargers still cater for 6V as many smaller motorbikes
run on this. Of course, the output's lower...

I know it says up to 5Ah, but it'd just take longer.

Maplin do one - but it's low powered but has the advantage of changing
to trickle when full.

Or there's plenty of 6V chargers on eBay.

Yes, but ebay or boot sale would probably be cheaper.

I've got this one. It has too high a charging voltage to
trickle charge, in spite of what it claims. You will need
to ensure you switch it off when battery is fully charged
(unless you like to hear fizzing noises and ballon-shaped
SLA batteries;-).

Why is that an advantage ?

As 6V car batteries are effectively obsolete and gel cell batteries need
different voltages, then we're presumably talking about small motorbike
batteries here. If they're charged fully then there's an advantage to
float charging them, but continuing to trickle charge them (voltage
between float and full-rate charging) is going to kill them pretty
quickly.

Because it means you can leave it overnight. Obviously leaving it on all
the time would be silly and not something you'd want to do with that
sort of charger but it does mean you don't have to sit and watch it like
a hawk.
