Steve,

The simplest way to find the studding frame is to just tap the plasterboard
with a hammer until you hear a solid 'thud' as opposed to the lighter
sound - its easy then to work out the centre of the stud.

Be aware though, that if the plasterboard partition is of the 'Paramount'
type, then the joining stud (frame) will probably not take the weigh of the
T.V.

Tap the wall with the handle of a screwdriver and listen. Mark the places
where it dosn't sound hollow.
You could also use a thermal imaging camera, but that would be cheating.

Erm! thermal imaging camera detects heat source.

Is this a wooden partioned bedroom wall? if so go into the loft? and look
for the partioned wall,on top of the wall you'll see nails where the beam
struts are running down the wall, a small hole poked through the ceiling
either side of the strut will indicate below where the strut is

Since he's going to be poking holes in the wall why not just poke one
where he suspects a stud is?. Feed the tape through and where it stops
might be the stud.

His problem is that he needs to put a wide noggin into the wall to
strengthen it. So he needs to cut a section of plasterboard out for
that anyway. It depends on how heavy the TV is. And how good the studs
are.

*Everything* gives off heat.

The parts of plasterboard backed by the studs will be at a different
temperature to those not thus show up on the thermal image.

Erm! yes, like a heat source behind the partition, which might occur
naturally.

Take a look at this
