I bought one of these cable and stud detectors from B&Q ages ago, and
unfortunately I can't find the instructions. It has a switch inside the
handle that can be switched to one or two, and then two "volume" type
switches on the top. Can Anyone clarify how to use this? I can sort of
get it working but not to the point where I trust it.

My similar (but not the same), you hold it up in free space with the
gain turned up high enough to trigger, then gently turn it down until
it just stops triggering. Not a brilliant device though - I would guess
the latest generation devices work rather better.

Well I had one of these and seem to recall that in stud finding mode,
it involved putting it on the plasterboard and fiddling with the
controls until it shut up. You then moved the thing around until it
squawked. This indicated that it had detected a stud - or a thicker
bit of plaster - or a nearby light switch - or a passing taxi using
its radio.

In cable detection mode, you fiddled with the controls until it shut
up and then moved it over the wall around the electrical fitting until
it beeped to show where the cable wasn't.

The one I had seemed unable to reliably detect either solid walls or
power cables when it was resting on them - I threw it away.

Perhaps I was unlucky.

Alas, nope. I have not found any stud scanner that can work through foil.


Thanks again to this group for the alternative trick for finding the
studs, which is to scan for the screw or nail heads using a magnet.
However, you still can't tell if there are pipes or wires behind the
foil.

Since all the studwork in this house is clad in foil-backed
plasterboard, I have no use for a stud finder here. Please can anyone
recommend a finder that will work well for just the other two jobs,
wires and metal buried under plaster?

voltage detection as well as studs. I have used it in the past for
locating burried screw heads (in plasterboards under the skim)

In a thread a few months back somone posted that they found what looked
like it was a rebadged Zircon in B&Q at about £15...

Don't actually know if it was the zircon or just something tha\t looked

I have been using it for past couple of months and it's been superb.
I'm 99% sure it's a Zircon... the 1% doubt is due to B&Q selling
something of good quality cheap!
As a stud detector this thing works great, it can even detect a change
of density in concrete to a couple inches in depth.

It doesn't have voltage or metal detector but you can get relatively
reliable one of these for not much.
