'GLOBAL BIRD FLU COULD CAUSE U.K. ECONOMIC CATASTROPHE'

As the world waits for a deadly repetition of the devastating 1918
influenza pandemic, more and more urgent warnings are being issued by
an increasing number of experts and organizations concerning the
near-future likelihood of a global avia flu pandemic.

A pandemic that could kill up to 20% of the world's population.

But, despite an increasing flood of bad news, China claims to have
developed an absolutely effective bird flu vaccine.

Will there be enough time to produce and stockpile sufficient vaccine
doses in the face of what increasingly appears to be a rapidly-mutating
and widely-spreading avian flu virus?

Personally with the WHO saying not if but when it happens there is a
serious threat. China do seem to be on the ball though, fairly swift
and drastic action over the dead geese recently.

It's a bit concerning that even Eskimos got Spanish flu in 1918.

I'm not sure if my master-plan to stock up with tinned food and live in a
hole in my back garden's going to work now.

Either being a Russian cosmonaut on a space station or being a nuclear
submarriner are probably the best bets for almost guaranteed survival.

Stone the crows!

The Eskimos believe, probably correctly, that the virus was introduced
to their communities by employees of the US mail service.

20% might be a little conservative.

Only those who don't know much about the disease, or the people who read
what the first group write about it in newspapers. With 31 known flu
pandemics since 1580, it is fairly safe to say that the 1918 pandemic was
atypical. The pandemics of 1957 and 1968 provide much more credible models
for future pandemics.

.....
But, despite an increasing flood of bad news, China claims to have

Most experts think that vaccinating birds is likely to make the flu endemic,
which is not considered to be an improvemnt.

....

If the virus mutates to create a pandemic, existing vaccines are unlikely to
be effective, which is why most European countries are planning on using
anti-viral agents as the first line of defence.
