That's a good piece, bud. Thanks for posting it. Some tough people, there,
no doubt about it.

Still loads of these operating near me - West Glamorgan has more private
mines left (mostly all anthracite) than any other county in UK. (Wales now
has only one deep mine left in the whole country). To heat my house, I
burn around 6 1/2 tons of anthracite grains or beans ( pea size or
hazelnut sized) each year in a gravity feed boiler, all of which comes
from a private mine. There are old level & slant mines all along the
mountain behind my property, few miles from here is a town (Richard Burton
of Liz Taylor fame was born there) with a drinking club called "The Blue
Scar Club" & still lots of scars around too!

I was introduced to shaft mining as a kid, and used to mine a small
shaft after school and on weekends to make an extra buck.........used
to use an old 1949 merc Club Coupe fastened to a bunch of cribbing
with a drum attached to a rear wheel to pull my buggy up...........A
lot of the small boot leg holes or single person operations used to
run off of abandoned mine shafts or pits that large companies deemed
not worthwhile to continue mining as the veins would be too small to
work economically, but you could still get a heap of coal out of
those small veins, but it was alot of work..........
