I was introduced to shaft mining as a kid, and used to mine a small
shaft after school and on weekends to make an extra buck.........used
to use an old 1949 merc Club Coupe fastened to a bunch of cribbing
with a drum attached to a rear wheel to pull my buggy up...........A
lot of the small boot leg holes or single person operations used to
run off of abandoned mine shafts or pits that large companies deemed
not worthwhile to continue mining as the veins would be too small to
work economically, but you could still get a heap of coal out of
those small veins, but it was alot of work..........
