There is no "right" to food, shelter, clothing, health care

There cannot be. Legitimate rights impose ethical obligations on others - obligations as to what they must do or not do. No one has any ethical obligation to provide food, shelter, clothing or health care - or any good or service - to others, unless he voluntarily assumes that obligation. It is unethical for anyone to use the police power of the state to seize value from me in order to obtain things the parasite wants out of life. The only legitimate universal rights are negative rights. There are no positive rights. You *cannot* have a right to goods and services, as that would impose an obligation on others involuntarily to provide value to you, and you cannot have a right to that. Parents have the obligation to plan their offspring and pay to feed/clothe/educate them. Conversely, we all have the right to a proper upbringing. If you can't do the time, keep it in your pants. |
