That's true, but many of the wealthiest are simply leeches on society who produce nothing. They're not leeches on society in any way. The may not apply their labor effort to anything to generate new value, but that doesn't equate to being a leech. If they lawfully and ethically own assets that provide them with a financial return and they live off that, they are not leeches. A good way of equalizing things would be a graduated capital gains tax, that stepped up just like income tax does, with 15% being the bottom bracket and 38% being the top bracket. I see no valid reason to want to "equalize" anything. That's because you have a bizarre view of what "fairness" is. To you the way wealth is divided in Mexico is "fair". Most Mexicans are dirt poor but there is a small segment of that society that owns most of the nation's wealth. You would say that small group "earned" that wealth fairly so the fact of such wide economic inequality doesn't matter and so the system there is a fair one. Now, most folks look at Mexico and are appalled at how much wealth the country has but so few have ANY of it. Most see the disparity of wealth in that country as being grossly unfair. You don't. So you see, your view is the weird one. What you consider fair most people would laugh at because of the obvious injustice of it. That's because you have no sympathy for the people on the bottom. You have more compassion for those with plenty. That's why your views are weird and why most people don't agree with you. Hawke You seem to have a bizarre view of distribution of wealth. A bit to the left of Karl Marx who felt that each should contribute to the economy according to his ability while drawing from the economy only what he needed. You on the other hand appear to believe that everyone should be handed the same paycheck; whether they contribute to the economy or not. -- Cheers, John B. |
