Look, this isn't a normal political fight. Oakland's police
department, right now, is operating under a federal consent decree for
civil-rights violations. They can't make any policy decisions without
approval from a court-appointed monitor. When someone coined the term
"pigs" back in the '60s, it was Oakland police they were talking
about. Really.

Now, that's not to make excuses for the violent demonstrators. But the
level of conflict from a month ago, which even the mayor admitted had
involved excessive police force, drew in a violent, mostly out-of-town
crowd of psychopaths and anarchists. Calling them "leftists" is like
calling the goon who murdered Dr. David Gunn a "rightist." This is
some nutty and violent young people spoiling for a fight.

So it's 'way outside of the normal political conflicts. And
generalizing from this to some noise in your head about "leftists"
tells us more about you and how high your knee can jerk than it does
about what's going on in Oakland.
